Bulbasaur
Bulbasaur leads as Generation I's top starter with a base stat total of 318—the highest among all three Kanto starters. Its balanced 65 stats across HP, Attack, Defense, Special, and Speed provide unmatched versatility. A concrete example: Bulbasaur's 65 Special stat is 30% higher than Charmander's 50, making it a superior special wall early in the game.

Squirtle
Squirtle claims second place with 314 total base stats, relying on a 65 Defense and 50 Speed to serve as a reliable early-game tank. Squirtle's 65 Defense is 18% tougher than the average starter defense of 55, allowing it to withstand physical hits while its 40 HP ensures decent longevity in early routes.

Charmander
Charmander secures third with 309 base stats, driven by a strong 60 Attack and 50 Special, but its 39 HP is 40% lower than Bulbasaur's HP. This weakness holds it back from a higher rank, though its Fire typing offers unique offensive power against Grass-types. Charmander's 60 Attack is 25% higher than Squirtle's 48 Attack, highlighting its role as a physical sweeper despite defensive fragility. Its Speed of 65 also outpaces both Bulbasaur and Squirtle by 15 points.

Sandshrew
Its Ground typing provides crucial immunity to Electric moves, but its 30 Speed is 40% slower than Charmander's 65 Speed. Sandshrew's 85 Defense is also 30% higher than Squirtle's 65, making it a physical wall. Despite these strengths, its low Speed and 50 HP limit its overall versatility compared to the Kanto starters.

Ekans
Ekans, the Snake Pokémon, packs surprising offensive punch for a Poison-type with 288 base stats. A 30% chance to poison with Wrap can wear down bulkier foes, making Ekans a threat in early-game battles. Though frail at 35 HP, it compensates with a respectable 45 Defense and the ability to learn Earthquake via TM, giving it coverage against Rock-types. Compared to Pidgey, Ekans trades raw Speed for superior Attack, allowing it to secure KOs that Pidgey cannot.

Spearow
This speed advantage lets it frequently strike first against Rattata, though Rattata’s higher 72 Speed can overtake it in head-to-head matchups. Spearow’s 55 Attack and 35 Special provide decent early-game damage, but its 30 HP and 30 Defense leave it fragile. With 15% more base stat total than Rattata, Spearow offers a slight durability bump.

Rattata
This blistering pace allows Rattata to land first hits with Hyper Fang (80 base power) and a 10% flinch chance, punishing slower foes. Its 56 Attack and 30 HP make it a glass cannon—while it hits harder than Pidgey’s 45 Attack, it faints to two strong hits. Rattata also learns Dig via TM, giving it coverage against Electric-types that plague Pidgey.

#8
Pidgey
Pidgey, the Tiny Bird Pokémon, settles at eighth with 251 base stats, its 56 Speed tying it with Rattata for early-game agility. However, Pidgey's 45 Attack and 40 Special fall short of Rattata’s, dealing 20% less damage on average. A 68% chance to learn Quick Attack by level 1 gives Pidgey priority moves, useful against slower foes like Ekans.

#9
Caterpie
Caterpie offers the quickest evolutionary path to Butterfree, requiring only 10,000 XP—a full 20% less than Weedle's path to Kakuna. With base stats of 195, including 45 HP and 35 Defense, it is a slower starter than the average Generation 1 Bug-type, but its line compensates with accurate Sleep Powder and 90 Base Power in Psychic moves post-evolution. This trade-off makes it a strategic choice for early-game status control, outperforming Weedle in long-term utility.

#10
Weedle
Its 195 total base stats tie it with Caterpie, but its Poison Sting and eventual Twinneedle offer 25 Base Power advantages over Caterpie's Tackle. This edge in speed and offense enables quicker damage output against early-game opponents, though it evolves into Beedrill, which lacks the special attack power of Butterfree. A concrete choice for players prioritizing speed over status.

Trend Analysis

The top 10 is dominated by starter Pokémon, occupying three of the first four spots, reflecting their unmatched cultural cachet in Generation I. Sandshrew’s fourth-place finish is a surprise—its 120 kg weight makes it the heaviest on the list, a stat that often correlates with a higher Attack stat in the original games. Ekans at fifth, with its long 20-inch frame, shows that serpentine designs appeal to fans looking for versatility. The bottom four are all common early-route captures—Spearow, Rattata, Pidgey, Caterpie, Weedle—indicating that familiarity drives these rankings more than raw competitiveness in battles. Notably, no Legendary or fully evolved Pokémon made the cut; this list celebrates the humble, the start-of-journey companions. Looking ahead, expect May 2027 to feature a similar nostalgia spike as Pokémon Gold and Silver approach their 30th anniversary.
