Raul Alfonsin

Raúl Alfonsín is celebrated for restoring Argentina's democracy in 1983, following seven years of military dictatorship. His presidency marked a crucial transition to civilian rule and a renewed commitment to human rights. One of his key policy shifts included a significant reduction in military spending, aiming to reassert civilian oversight over the armed forces. His administration also prioritized investigating human rights abuses committed during the dictatorship, leading to the trial and conviction of former junta members. Although his government faced considerable economic challenges, with an average annual growth rate of approximately 2% during his tenure, Alfonsín's unwavering dedication to democratic principles and the rule of law solidified his place as a foundational figure in modern Argentine governance. He resigned in 1989, six months before the end of his term, amid hyperinflation and social unrest.
