Dark Matter Evidence

The existence of dark matter presents one of the most compelling unsolved puzzles in modern cosmology. Groundbreaking work by astronomers Vera Rubin and Kent Ford in the 1970s, involving the measurement of galaxy rotation curves, revealed a significant discrepancy. They observed that stars on the outskirts of galaxies were orbiting at speeds approximately 50% faster than what the visible mass of the galaxies could account for. This observational evidence strongly suggested the presence of an unseen, undetectable mass, which scientists now refer to as dark matter. Current estimations indicate that dark matter constitutes about 27% of the universe's total mass-energy content. While its precise nature remains elusive, its gravitational influence is undeniable, prompting ongoing research to directly detect and understand this mysterious component of our cosmos.
