Flight of the Conchords (NZ/US)
Flight of the Conchords blasted onto HBO with two perfect seasons of deadpan musical comedy, earning a cult following among comedy nerds worldwide. As New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie delivered 22 episodes packed with 49 original songs, including the viral "Business Time" and "Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros." Their unique format—seamlessly weaving absurdist sketches into a mockumentary style—cost only $200,000 per episode, which is 70% cheaper than the typical network sitcom budget.
