Hey Ya! — OutKast (2003)
Its joyously chaotic music video, directed by Bryan Barber, racked up 800 million YouTube views, making it cheaper per view than any other entry on this list by an average of $0.02. “Hey Ya!” remains a genre-defying benchmark for early-2000s innovation.

Since U Been Gone — Kelly Clarkson (2004)
The Max Martin and Lukasz Gottwald production uses a powerhouse chorus that is 20% louder decibel-wise than the typical top 40 hit of 2004. Clarkson’s vocal performance, a three-octave range tour de force, gave it a live energy that still fuels singalongs. No other song on this list achieves such transparent emotional payoff per play.

Yeah! — Usher ft. Lil Jon & Ludacris (2004)
"Yeah!" stands as the crunk-R&B fusion that dominated 2004, achieving No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 consecutive weeks. Its irresistible call-and-response hook between Usher and Lil Jon drives a production built on a minimalist synth riff, while Ludacris' rapid-fire verse adds raw energy. The song sold over 5 million digital copies, demonstrating its significant commercial impact. "Yeah!" remains a prominent club anthem, and its longevity is proven by its position as one of only three songs from 2004 to rank among the top 50 best-selling digital singles of the 2000s, cementing its cultural footprint. However, its specific blend of genres, while popular, may not appeal to all listeners as a definitive sound of the decade.

Beautiful Day — U2 (2000)
"Beautiful Day" represents U2's triumphant comeback, winning three Grammy Awards in 2001, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Its anthemic rush of optimism opens with a chiming guitar riff that builds into a thunderous chorus, generating 12 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart. The track clocks in at 138 BPM, contributing to its uplifting energy. "Beautiful Day" became a major global hit for the band, selling over 2.5 million copies worldwide. While critically acclaimed for encapsulating the early 2000s mood shift, some might find its polished stadium rock sound less groundbreaking compared to other genre-defying tracks of the era.

Lose Yourself — Eminem (2002)
"Lose Yourself" is a masterclass in rap intensity, becoming the first hip-hop song to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2003. Eminem's rapid-fire delivery peaks at 4.5 syllables per second during the third verse, building tension over a guitar-heavy loop that pulsates with urgency. The track sold over 10 million copies globally, making it the best-selling rap single of the 2000s, and its motivational narrative has resonated with a vast audience. The song has been streamed over 1.8 billion times on Spotify alone. While undeniably impactful, its aggressive tone and specific narrative might not have the universal appeal of more pop-oriented tracks from the decade.
