Shang Dynasty (1600–1046 BCE)

The Shang Dynasty (1600–1046 BCE) holds the distinction of being China's first historically verified dynasty. This claim is powerfully supported by over 150,000 oracle bone inscriptions, which provide the earliest known evidence of written Chinese. These artifacts offer invaluable insights into the period's society, religion, and administration. The Shang Dynasty was also marked by remarkable advancements in bronze metallurgy. Its skilled artisans produced some of the most sophisticated bronze vessels of their time, exemplified by the monumental Houmuwu Ding, an 833-kilogram rectangular ding (ancient cooking vessel) that showcases the advanced casting techniques achieved during this era. While the oracle bones and bronze work provide a rich understanding of the Shang, much of the dynasty's political and social structure is still interpreted through these archaeological findings.
