Ma On Shan

Seen from Tolo Harbour, Ma On Shan is unmistakable: two humps separated by a dip, the saddle-shaped silhouette that gives the mountain its name, which means 'saddle mountain'. At 702 metres it is not the highest peak in Hong Kong, but its summit route is regularly named among the territory's hardest day hikes, and the reason is terrain rather than height. The walk begins innocently on the Ma On Shan Family Walk, a manicured path inside the country park. Past it the surface degrades to dirt through scrub, then to a steep, loose-rock climb up Tiu Shau Ngam. Next come the Hunch Backs, a row of rocky false summits around 677 metres that need hands as well as feet. It is scrambling rather than climbing, but it is relentless. The last approach to the top runs along one of Hong Kong's most photographed ridgelines: a narrow spine of bare rock with the green hills of the Sai Kung peninsula dropping away on one side and Tolo Harbour and the towers of Ma On Shan town on the other. The upper mountain is open grass and shrub on volcanic soil, a sharp contrast with the forested lower slopes. On the south-west flank lie the remains of the Ma On Shan iron mine, worked from 1906 until 1976. After the summit most hikers drop onto MacLehose Trail Section 4 and cross the Ngong Ping plateau, a broad, gentle grassy tableland once used for grazing, before a long staircase down into Sai Kung and a seafood dinner on the waterfront. Take at least two litres of water, start early to beat both the heat and the afternoon cloud that often hides the summit, and save this one for dry days. Mobile signal is patchy near the top.

null{"Route / stage":"Ma On Shan Country Park — Ma On Shan Family Walk to the summit, descending via MacLehose Trail Section 4 and Ngong Ping to Sai Kung","Location":"Ma On Shan Country Park, between Sha Tin / Ma On Shan and Sai Kung, New Territories","Distance":"10.85 km","Distance note":"10.85 km from Ma On Shan MTR to Sai Kung; about 7 km if you start from the Country Park archway, or 12 km to Sai Kung town centre.","Typical time":"About 5 hours including stops (just under 3 hours of moving time)","Difficulty":"Hard — about 866 m of total climbing to a 702 m summit, with loose-rock scrambling over Tiu Shau Ngam and the Hunch Backs and a narrow, exposed final ridge.","Highest point":"702 m (Ma On Shan summit)","Best season":"October to December. Avoid summer heat, and avoid the days just after rain, when the loose rock on the upper ridge is slippery.","How to get there":"MTR Tuen Ma Line to Ma On Shan (or Heng On, Exit B). Walk about 45 minutes / 3 km uphill to the Ma On Shan Family Walk archway, or take the infrequent village bus NR84 from On Luk Street. Finish in Sai Kung, where bus 92 (Diamond Hill), green minibus 1A (Choi Hung) or 101M (Hang Hau) run back to the MTR.","Safety note":"The final ridge to the summit is a narrow spine with drops on both sides. Trail guides warn that the old fixed rope there should not be trusted, so treat it as a scramble for dry days only. There is no water after the Country Park gate and little shade on the upper mountain."}
