Battle of Midway (1942)

The Battle of Midway, fought from June 4–7, 1942, is widely considered the most decisive naval engagement in history. The U.S. Navy, having broken Japanese radio codes, successfully ambushed and sank all four of Japan's large aircraft carriers—the Akagi, Kaga, Soryu, and Hiryu—while losing only the USS Yorktown. This devastating blow crippled Japan's offensive naval capabilities and effectively ended its expansion in the Pacific. The strategic implications were immense, as it rendered implausible any scenario of Japanese dominance in East Asia. The severe losses inflicted upon the Imperial Japanese Navy at Midway—four carriers sunk versus one American carrier—significantly hindered Japan's ability to recover and continue its aggressive campaigns in the Pacific theater.
