The Creation of Adam
Michelangelo's "The Creation of Adam," painted around 1511-1512, is arguably the most famous fresco on the Sistine Chapel ceiling in Vatican City. This iconic image, depicting God giving life to the first man, is part of a larger decorative scheme that spans over 500 square meters and includes more than 300 figures. The fresco, measuring approximately 280 cm x 570 cm, showcases the dramatic moment of creation through the nearly touching fingertips of God and Adam, a detail that has become one of the most reproduced religious images globally. Michelangelo, who considered himself primarily a sculptor, completed the entire Sistine Chapel ceiling in approximately four years, working on scaffolding high above the chapel floor.
