The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night, painted in June 1889, is a masterpiece of post-impressionism, depicting a dramatic night sky with a swirling cypress tree. This iconic 29x36-inch oil on canvas is a prominent feature of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City, where it draws approximately 1.5 million visitors annually. Van Gogh created the work while institutionalized at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, and it is believed to depict the view from his east-facing window just before sunrise, with the addition of an idealized village. Its vibrant brushwork and emotional depth have made it one of the most celebrated and recognizable works in art history.
