Ancient Greece

Classical Athens in the 5th–4th century BC birthed democracy, philosophy (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle), drama (Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes), and history (Thucydides, Herodotus). Its mathematical and scientific tradition, transmitted through Rome and the Islamic world, directly sparked the European Renaissance and Scientific Revolution. Concrete evidence of its dominance: roughly 70% of modern scientific terms derive from Greek roots, and the democratic system in the U.S. owes its core structure to Athenian models. Western civilisation is, in substantial part, an extended footnote to ancient Greece.
