Frequently Asked Questions About the Most Watched Sports Events
### How is "most watched" measured on this list? Viewership figures combine official broadcaster reports, FIFA/IOC/league attendance data, and independent global audience measurement where available. Where a number is disputed between sources, the higher verified figure is shown with its source.
### Are streaming and digital viewers included? Yes. For events after 2015, cumulative figures include verified streaming and official digital-platform audiences alongside traditional TV viewership, which is why newer events often rank alongside older broadcast records.
### Why is the 2022 FIFA World Cup final ranked first? FIFA reported a peak global audience of approximately 1.5 billion for the Argentina vs. France final, with a cumulative tournament reach of 3.6 billion — the largest single-event audience ever recorded for a sporting event.
### Why are some events listed without a final score? For multi-week tournaments such as the Tour de France and the Summer Olympics, the figure shown reflects the cumulative global audience for the event as a whole, not a single match or game.
