IonQ QKD Network — Europe's Largest
IonQ's deployment of Romania's national Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) network, featuring 36 quantum-secured links stretching over 1,500 kilometers, marks it as one of Europe's most extensive operational QKD infrastructures. This network, powered by IonQ's subsidiary ID Quantique, became operational in February 2026 and provides physics-based security, where any attempt at eavesdropping on the quantum state of photons becomes detectable. The initiative is a foundational component of the EuroQCI effort, aiming to establish an EU-wide quantum-secure communication infrastructure. The network connects six major metropolitan hubs—Bucharest, Iași, Timișoara, Craiova, Cluj-Napoca, and Constanța—and is designed for sensitive use cases in banking, government, and military sectors where the cost premium of QKD is justified. For comparison, China's 2,000-km Beijing-Shanghai quantum communication line has been operational since 2017.
