Hattusha
Hattusha, the capital of the Hittite Empire, stands as a testament to sophisticated ancient engineering with its impressive fortifications, including 8 kilometers of double walls and monumental gateways. Among these, the Lion Gate, carved from single blocks of limestone, is a striking example of Hittite artistry and defensive architecture. The site, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986, is also famous for its archive of over 30,000 cuneiform clay tablets dating to the 13th century BCE. These tablets include the Kadesh Agreement, recognized as the earliest known peace treaty (circa 1285 BCE), offering invaluable insights into ancient diplomacy and daily life.
