Los Angeles iPad Initiative ($1.3 Billion Disaster)

The Los Angeles iPad Initiative stands as one of the costliest failures in educational technology, with an estimated price tag of $1.3 billion. This program, launched in 2013, aimed to equip every student in the Los Angeles Unified School District with an iPad preloaded with a Pearson curriculum. However, the initiative encountered significant problems almost immediately. Within weeks of deployment, students found ways to bypass security restrictions on the devices. The Pearson educational software itself was also widely reported to be incomplete and riddled with bugs. Further compounding the issues, an FBI investigation was launched into the procurement process, leading to allegations of corruption. The program was ultimately suspended in 2014, leaving the district with a substantial number of unusable devices and creating a significant setback in its digital learning efforts.
