One Laptop Per Child (OLPC)
The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project, championed by Nicholas Negroponte, sought to transform education in developing nations by providing durable, low-cost laptops. The initiative successfully distributed over 2 million of its distinctive green-and-white XO laptops across various countries. Despite this widespread distribution, the project faced considerable hurdles. Many of the devices experienced frequent breakdowns, a common issue attributed to their build quality. Additionally, the project often lacked crucial accompanying teacher training programs, which hindered effective integration into classrooms. Over its more than ten years of operation, independent studies and assessments largely concluded that the OLPC project did not lead to measurable improvements in learning outcomes, contributing to its eventual decline in prominence.
