Second Life Virtual Classrooms

Second Life virtual classrooms, initially promoted as the forefront of immersive education around 2007-2008, largely became abandoned by universities within three years due to declining user engagement and a steep learning curve. While hundreds of colleges and universities explored the platform for instruction, its active user base experienced a significant drop, falling to between 800,000 and 900,000 by the end of 2017 after peaking around 2007 with over 1.1 million active users. Universities often invested substantially, with some reports indicating an average investment of $500,000 per campus. However, student engagement data revealed that a high percentage of classes, in some cases as many as 98%, never returned after the initial session. The platform's complexity and the emergence of more user-friendly social media networks contributed to its diminished educational relevance.
