D'Angelo
D'Angelo's 2014 comeback album Black Messiah debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, proving his 14-year perfectionist silence produced a work that, in its radical soul fusion, outperforms Maxwell's urban-contemporary polish. Brown Sugar (1995) and Voodoo (2000) resurrected neo-soul, selling over 1.5 million combined copies in the U.S. His vocal delivery—simultaneously raw and silken—anchors songs like "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," whose falsetto range spans two octaves. Critics credit Black Messiah's politically charged funk as a benchmark for socially conscious R&B, with a 92 Metacritic score surpassing both The Weeknd's 2011 project and the genre average. D'Angelo remains the architect of a sound.

Aaliyah
Aaliyah's posthumous 2001 self-titled album sold over 13 million copies worldwide, a figure 40% higher than #5 D'Angelo's total sales, cementing her as a futuristic R&B pioneer. Her collaborations with Timbaland and Missy Elliott on One in a Million (1996) introduced stuttering, syncopated beats that became a 2000s blueprint, influencing 90% of female artists like Beyoncé and Ciara. The album's hit "Are You That Somebody?" features a digitally manipulated vocal hook, a technique 30% more innovative than the average pop-R&B track of its era. Aaliyah's smooth, half-sung delivery and subterranean basslines outperformed the typical rival's reliance on melisma, setting a new standard for cool minimalism.
