Why two defenders are on a list of attackers
This list skews heavily toward forwards and attacking midfielders, which makes the two defenders on it worth pausing on rather than skimming past. Cafu remains the only player in football history to appear in three consecutive World Cup finals — 1994, 1998 and 2002 — across a career that redefined what an attacking right back could contribute going forward as well as defending. Roberto Carlos, on the opposite flank, became one of the most feared free-kick takers in the world from a fullback position, at a time when that kind of attacking output from a defender was still unusual. Both earned their place here against strikers and playmakers, which says something about how much they expanded what their positions were expected to do.
A World Cup win isn't the only measure here
Several names on this list won the World Cup with Brazil — Pelé, Garrincha, Romário, Roberto Carlos, Cafu, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo all lifted it at least once — but Zico never did, despite being one of the most technically gifted players of his generation. He was the standout of Brazil's celebrated 1982 team, widely remembered as one of the best sides never to win the tournament it entered as a favorite. His inclusion here alongside players with winners' medals is a reminder that this kind of list measures quality and influence on the game, not just what a player collected.
