From the sweeping natural vistas of Planet Earth to the courtroom drama of Making a Murderer, the greatest documentaries do something fiction rarely can — they place the unmediated truth of the world in front of you and dare you to look away. These ten films and series changed what the genre could be: investigative, poetic, confrontational, intimate, and always unforgettable. Each one left a measurable mark on culture, legislation, public debate, or the art of cinema itself.

Planet Earth (BBC, 2006)
Planet Earth remains the undisputed benchmark for nature documentary filmmaking, setting a standard that even Making a Murderer cannot match in visual ambition. Produced by the BBC Natural History Unit and narrated by David Attenborough, its 11 episodes cost approximately $25 million, making it the most expensive series of its kind at the time. Shot over five years across 62 countries with pioneering high-definition cameras, it captured never-before-seen aerial views of the Himalayas and microscopic cave ecosystems. The series reached an estimated 543 million viewers in 130 countries during its first broadcast, winning four BAFTA Awards and four Emmys.

Making a Murderer (Netflix, 2015)
Directed by Laura Ricciardi and Monika Demos over a decade, it chronicles Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey's trials for Teresa Halbach's 2005 murder, raising profound questions about police misconduct. All ten episodes drew 19.3 million US viewers in 35 days—an unprecedented debut for a documentary series. The series sparked a White House petition with 128,000 signatures and directly influenced Wisconsin legislative reforms on wrongful convictions.

The Act of Killing (2012)
The Act of Killing redefines the documentary form by forcing perpetrators to reenact their own atrocities, a technique far more controversial than Bowling for Columbine's direct interviews. Directed by Joshua Oppenheimer, it focuses on the 1965-66 Indonesian mass killings, where an estimated 500,000 to 1 million alleged communists were murdered. The film's innovative approach had perpetrators dramatize their crimes in chosen cinematic styles, leading to a work Werner Herzog called "unprecedented." Screened at Telluride, Toronto, and Berlin, it was shortlisted for an Oscar and prompted Indonesia's parliament to formally acknowledge the killings after 50 years.

Bowling for Columbine (2002)
Michael Moore's exposé of America's gun violence culture, centered on the 1999 Columbine massacre, grossed $58 million worldwide against a $4 million budget—making it the highest-grossing documentary at release. It won the 2003 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature and a BAFTA, with Moore's confrontational interview of Kmart executives leading the retailer to remove handgun ammunition from all US stores within days.

March of the Penguins (2005)
Luc Jacquet's 85-minute film, shot entirely in Antarctica, follows emperor penguins on their annual 70-mile march through winter temperatures of -58°F and 100 mph winds. Narrated by Morgan Freeman for its US release, it won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2006 and was seen by an estimated 50 million people in its first year, transforming an austere nature study into an unexpected mainstream phenomenon.

Searching for Sugar Man (2012)
Malik Bendjelloul's Searching for Sugar Man (2012) delivers documentary cinema's most emotionally overwhelming revelation, earning the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2013 alongside a BAFTA and 14 other major prizes. The film follows two South African fans investigating the mystery of Rodriguez, a Detroit folk singer whose 1970s albums flopped in the US but became anti-apartheid anthems—and who they believed died by suicide on stage. Rodriguez died in 2023 as a cult hero on two continents, with the film grossing $3.7 million globally on a $277,000 budget.

I Am Not Your Negro (2016)
Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2017, it holds a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 122 reviews and was selected for the U.S. National Film Registry in 2021. Peck draws from 30 pages of James Baldwin's unfinished manuscript to construct a meditation on race through the lives and murders of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr.—three men Baldwin knew personally.

Won't You Be My Neighbor? (2018)
Won't You Be My Neighbor? Morgan Neville's portrait of Fred Rogers holds a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and won both the Peabody Award and Critics' Choice Award for Best Documentary. Arriving in an era of widespread political cruelty, the film deploys Rogers' radical gentleness as a counterargument, prompting thousands of viewers to report crying in cinemas and triggering a nationwide conversation about empathy as a public good, with $22.7 million in U.S. box office proving its cultural reach.

13th (Ava DuVernay, 2016)
13th is the definitive exposé of America's carceral state, arguing with devastating clarity that the 13th Amendment's slavery exception clause birthed a two-million-person prison system. The documentary traces the explosion from 357,000 incarcerated people in 1970 to over 2.3 million by 2016, a 544% increase that far outpaces the population growth of any other nation. Nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, it holds a 97% Rotten Tomatoes rating and won the 2017 Emmy for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special. Following George Floyd's murder, it became Netflix's most-watched documentary in 2020 and was screened by the United Nations in Geneva.

Free Solo (2018)
Free Solo captures the most astonishing athletic feat ever filmed: Alex Honnold's rope-free ascent of El Capitan's 3,000-foot Freerider route in 3 hours 56 minutes. The first and only free solo of that climb, it earned a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score from 95 critical reviews and won both the 2019 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and the BAFTA for Best Documentary. Director Jimmy Chin embedded cameras on climbers below Honnold, capturing 1.2 terabyes of footage for a 100-minute film that many critics call the most intense cinematic experience ever. With only one climber in history achieving this feat, Free Solo sets the gold standard for sports documentaries.
