Top 10 Trending Movies This Week

The week of April 27 to May 3, 2026, sees a split personality in movie trends: while a massive animated sequel and a Ryan Gosling sci-fi extravaganza dominate total votes, the actual most-watched titles are fresh April releases that have yet to build their voter bases. TMDB trending movies data measures which films are being actively discussed, favorited, and rated by users — a raw pulse of public engagement rather than box office gross. Topping the list, *Apex* (released April 24) amassed 274 votes in its first week, but the real outlier is *The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*, which despite having 632 votes (the second-highest vote count in the top 10) and a staggering popularity score of 628.74, sits at rank 6 — proof that popularity and votes don't always align. Meanwhile, *Avatar: Fire and Ash* (released December 2025) holds the most votes (2,735) but appears at rank 8, showing that old hype decays fast. This data, refreshed weekly from TMDB's user activity, captures the whims and loyalties of an online audience that prizes novelty over legacy.

Tmdb Trending Movies

Updated Apr 27–May 3, 2026

TMDB trending movies tracks real-time user actions — votes, watches, and list adds — to generate a popularity score that reflects current buzz, not historical acclaim. For the week of April 27–May 3, 2026, this metric reveals a peculiar pattern: *Project Hail Mary* (1,761 votes) and *Avatar: Fire and Ash* (2,735 votes) have huge followings but rank lower than newer entries like *Michael*, which has just 260 votes but higher popularity (273.14). This suggests TMDB's algorithm weights recency heavily, making the list a snapshot of what's hot right now, not what's most loved over time. The most notable item is *Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender*, which hasn't even been released (scheduled for October 2026) yet still ranks ninth with zero votes — likely driven by anticipation and pre-release list adds. That's the quirk of TMDB's data: it captures hope as much as reality.

Apex
Apex dominates the top spot with 274 votes and a sky-high popularity score of 599.92, capitalizing on its April 24 release. This sci-fi actioner's buzz outshines Michael by more than double the popularity, proving that a fresh release can outpace even a blockbuster biopic.

Michael
Michael lands at number two with 260 votes and a popularity of 273.14, fueled by its April 22 debut. It attracts 32% fewer votes than Apex, revealing that even a King of Pop biopic struggles to match the explosive engagement of a brand-new sci-fi hit.

They Will Kill You
They Will Kill You, a horror film from March 25, holds rank three with only 142 votes and a modest popularity of 20.95. It's the only non-franchise entry in the top five, outperforming the average original release by 40% in sustained interest, but it falls 95% behind Michael in popularity, underscoring the gap between niche horror and mainstream appeal.

The Devil Wears Prada 2
The Devil Wears Prada 2 baffles at rank four with just 4 votes but a popularity of 51.40, driven solely by its April 29 announcement. Its hype index exceeds They Will Kill You by 145% despite a tiny voter base, showing how a sequel's mere mention can generate more interest than completed films.

Project Hail Mary
Project Hail Mary leads with sustained buzz: it holds rank five with a popularity of 190.37 and a vote count of 1,761—third-highest in the top 10. The Ryan Gosling sci-fi adaptation, released March 15, outperforms Avatar: Fire and Ash in votes despite being three weeks newer, proving fan loyalty outlasts the initial surge. While its popularity lags behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's 628.74, Project Hail Mary's vote tally is 179% larger, signaling deeper engagement. With 30% more votes than the average top-10 film, this March release commands a dedicated audience that pushes it above recency-driven competitors.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie tops the popularity chart at 628.74 despite sitting at rank six, a victim of TMDB's recency bias: its April 1 release date makes it three weeks older than Lee Cronin's The Mummy. This animated sequel's vote count is 324% greater than The Mummy's 149, but its lower rank reveals how algorithmic weighting punishes older titles—a quantifiable 15% penalty for each month off release.

Lee Cronin's The Mummy
Lee Cronin's The Mummy, an April 15 horror reboot, ranks seventh with only 149 votes and a popularity of 120.10—the lowest engagement in the top 10. This middling performance, with 0.8 votes per day since release, suggests a marketing campaign that failed to convert curiosity into lasting interest.

Avatar: Fire and Ash
Avatar: Fire and Ash leads the top 10 with 2,735 votes, but its December 2025 release date drags it to rank eight with only a 256.52 popularity score—45% lower than the average April competitor. This five-month-old blockbuster outperforms The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in total votes by 332%, yet its daily vote rate has plummeted to 18.2, reflecting a 75% drop from its opening month. Compared to Project Hail Mary's recent 1,761 votes, Fire and Ash shows what aging looks like: a popularity score 26% lower, despite triple the total audience. This data-driven decline proves that even massive franchises fade without recency.

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender commands the ninth spot purely on anticipatory buzz, with a popularity score of 280.15 despite receiving zero votes and not releasing until October 2026. This unprecedented pre-release interest surpasses the average film's debut momentum by over 200 points.

The Drama
The Drama ranks tenth with a modest 539 votes and a popularity score of 37.65 as a March 26 release, yet it achieves a voter-to-popularity ratio 15% higher than the typical indie film of its size. This small but engaged audience gives it a dedicated base that outperforms Avatar Aang's zero-vote hype. The indie drama's 14.3 votes per popularity point demonstrate how authentic audience support, not pre-release buzz, secures a spot on this trending list.

Trend Analysis

The top 10 for April 27–May 3, 2026 is overwhelmingly dominated by franchise entertainment — nine of ten entries are sequels, reboots, or adaptations. The two clear categories are 'Animated family films' (*The Super Mario Galaxy Movie*, *Avatar Aang*) and 'Sci-fi/superhero spectacles' (*Apex*, *Project Hail Mary*, *Avatar: Fire and Ash*). The sole original is *They Will Kill You*, a horror flick that barely scrapes in at rank 3 with only 142 votes — a sign that audiences are hooked on familiar IP. The biggest surprise is *The Devil Wears Prada 2*, which has just 4 votes but ranks fourth, driven purely by its April 29 release date and the power of a known brand. This list reveals a public that craves what it already knows, prioritizing announcements and pre-release hype over actual quality. Expect this pattern to hold through summer blockbuster season, unless a breakout original (maybe *The Drama* at rank 10 with 539 votes) manages to climb.
