James Cameron has now held the all-time box office record twice, which tells you almost everything about how this list works: it's less a top ten than a running argument between about four franchises. Avatar's $2.923 billion worldwide take carried the crown from 2010 to 2019, lost it to Endgame for a matter of weeks, then reclaimed it in 2021 off the strength of re-releases. Whatever you think of the plot, it proved something durable: audiences will pay a 3D premium for spectacle, at least when the spectacle is actually spectacular. Endgame is what happens when a studio spends eleven years and twenty-two films building toward a single afternoon, and the afternoon actually delivers. Its $1.2 billion global opening weekend is still the biggest in film history, and the film went on to earn $2.799 billion total — briefly the highest-grossing film ever made, before Avatar's 2019 China re-release took the record back just 48 days later. No other franchise has managed a payoff on this scale, largely because no other franchise had the patience, or the box-office confidence, to make audiences wait a decade for it. Cameron's sequel earned $2.320 billion, silencing skeptics who said nobody wanted a sequel 13 years later. It became only the third film ever to cross $2 billion and the sixth to cross $2 billion adjusted. Legs were extraordinary: earned more in its second month than its first in many markets. The original Cameron box office king earned $2.264 billion worldwide, holding the all-time record for 12 years (1998-2010). It was the first film to gross $1 billion, the first to gross $2 billion (with re-releases), and launched Leonardo DiCaprio into permanent A-list orbit. Source: Box Office Mojo.

The Star Wars revival earned $2.071 billion, including a record $247M domestic opening weekend at the time. It proved that nostalgia plus competent filmmaking equals generational box office. Still the highest-grossing domestic release ever at $936.7M. Source: Box Office Mojo.

Marvel's first film to cross $2 billion is also the one that took the biggest creative swing — killing half the universe on a cliffhanger and trusting audiences to come back for the resolution. They did, in record numbers: a $640.5 million global opening weekend that stood as the largest ever at the time, followed by repeat viewings driven by a snap nobody wanted to just watch once. $2.052 billion worldwide is the reward for a decade of connected storytelling finally cashing in its bet.

Earned $1.921 billion during a pandemic, making it the most remarkable box office achievement of the COVID era. Its $260M domestic opening during Omicron proved audiences would brave anything for the right event film. Three Spider-Men > one. Source: Box Office Mojo.

Pixar's sequel about teenage emotions earned $1.699 billion, becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time. It dethroned Frozen II and proved that Pixar still owns the family market when the concept is right. Opening weekend was $154M domestic. Source: Box Office Mojo.

The dinosaur franchise revival earned $1.671 billion, including the first-ever $500M global opening weekend. Chris Pratt training velociraptors was absurd enough to work. It proved that brand recognition plus CGI spectacle remains a reliable formula. Source: Box Office Mojo.

The Lion King's photorealistic remake is the clearest data point on this list for the idea that reviews and box office can move in completely opposite directions: critics gave it a mediocre 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, largely for animal faces too realistic to convey the original's emotional range, and audiences showed up anyway to the tune of $1.663 billion. Disney doesn't classify it as an animated film for awards purposes, since every frame is computer-generated rather than hand-drawn or traditionally animated — an odd distinction that, if ignored, would make this the highest-grossing animated film ever instead of Inside Out 2. Nostalgia, it turns out, doesn't need good reviews to sell tickets.
Why this list skews so recent
Every film here is from 2009 or later, and that's not a coincidence: nominal box office totals aren't adjusted for ticket price inflation or the growth of international markets, especially China, which barely factored into box office totals before the 2010s. A film like Titanic looks less dominant here than it felt at the time only because ticket prices have roughly doubled since 1997 and the pool of moviegoing markets has grown substantially since.
Two names show up again and again
James Cameron directed three of these ten films (Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Titanic), and three more belong to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Spider-Man: No Way Home). That's not a coincidence either — both represent the same bet: spend enough on a theatrical event that people who don't normally go to the movies decide to show up anyway.
