Grand Theft Auto VI
Rockstar Games' first mainline GTA entry in over a decade, GTA VI is set in a fictional Miami-inspired Vice City and stars the series' first female protagonist, Lucia. Launching on PS5 and Xbox Series X, its debut trailer racked up 93 million YouTube views in 24 hours — a world record — and the game's reported development budget exceeds $2 billion, making it the most expensive entertainment product ever produced. The anticipation has been building since 2013's GTA V, which itself sold over 200 million copies, and expectations for the sequel are stratospheric.

The Elder Scrolls VI
Bethesda Game Studios' follow-up to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been in development since 2018 and remains one of gaming's most eagerly awaited titles. Skyrim sold over 30 million copies and was re-released on nearly every platform imaginable, so the pressure on its successor is immense. While Bethesda has revealed almost nothing beyond a brief teaser, the promise of a new open-world RPG in the Elder Scrolls universe — with a decade of technological advancement behind it — means anticipation has only grown with every passing year.

Hollow Knight: Silksong
Team Cherry's long-awaited sequel to the beloved indie Metroidvania Hollow Knight stars Hornet, the fierce daughter of the Pale King, as she fights through a vast new kingdom called Pharloom. Announced in 2019, Silksong spent years near the top of "most anticipated" charts despite almost no new information being released — a testament to the extraordinary goodwill earned by the original game. It finally released in September 2025 to strong sales, with over 150 new enemy types, a full orchestral score, and a world far larger than its predecessor.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
Hideo Kojima returns with the sequel to his divisive 2019 strand-type game, reuniting Norman Reedus as Sam Porter Bridges alongside new cast members Elle Fanning and Shioli Kutsuna. Launched on PS5, it expands the original's meditative delivery gameplay with new traversal tools, more aggressive enemy encounters, and a deeper narrative about human connection. Kojima Productions' signature auteur filmmaking approach — blurring the line between game and cinema — has only grown more ambitious, and the sequel promises to be one of the most visually striking games ever made.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
Konami's faithful remake of the 2004 PS2 classic brings the Cold War-era Soviet jungles of Snake Eater to life in Unreal Engine 5, with a full graphical overhaul and re-recorded voice performances while keeping the original's iconic story intact. Released on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC in August 2025, it marked Metal Gear's long-awaited return to console after years of silence following the controversial departure of series creator Hideo Kojima. For a generation who never played the original, and for veterans who consider Snake Eater the greatest entry in the series, the remake was one of gaming's most anticipated homecomings.

Fable
Playground Games' reboot of the beloved British RPG series returns players to the fairy-tale world of Albion with a brand-new story, a female protagonist, and the series' signature blend of humour, moral choices, and whimsical world-building. Now confirmed for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S — a shift from the Xbox-exclusivity once expected — and delayed to 2027, it remains one of Microsoft's most important first-party projects in years, carrying the weight of enormous nostalgia from fans of Lionhead Studios' originals. Early previews suggest Playground have captured the irreverent tone while updating the open-world ambition to modern standards.

Ghost of Yotei
Sucker Punch Productions' follow-up to the acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima is set in 1603 Hokkaido, Japan, with a new protagonist, Atsu, a female ronin hunting a group of killers known as the Yotei Six. Released on PS5 in October 2025, it built on Ghost of Tsushima's extraordinary 13 million copies sold with a larger open world, new combat systems, and the same breathtaking natural beauty that made the original a visual benchmark. The shift to Hokkaido's snow-capped mountains and volcanic landscapes delivered one of the most distinctive open-world settings in recent memory.

Monster Hunter Wilds
Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds launched in February 2025 and immediately shattered franchise records, selling 8 million copies in its first three days to become the fastest-selling game in Capcom's history. The living ecosystem world — where weather, time of day, and monster migrations all interact dynamically — set a new standard for environmental design in the series. With major title updates introducing new elder dragons and regions already confirmed, Wilds is the rare game that exceeded its enormous pre-release hype in almost every regard.

Borderlands 4
Gearbox Software's fourth mainline entry in the looter-shooter franchise, released in September 2025, arrived with four new Vault Hunters, a new alien planet, and a villain the developers positioned to rival Handsome Jack — the iconic antagonist whose shadow has loomed over every Borderlands sequel. The massively expanded skill tree system and four-player co-op structure drew strong reviews, and the series' signature blend of procedurally generated weapons, irreverent humour, and addictive loot loops remained as compelling as ever.

Doom: The Dark Ages
id Software's prequel to Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal sends the Doom Slayer into a medieval-inspired hellscape where he wields a spiked power shield, a mechanical flail, and the series' signature arsenal against demons riding dragons. Released on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC in May 2025, The Dark Ages was the first Doom title to emphasise a grounded, stand-and-fight combat philosophy over the hyper-mobile arena style of its predecessors. The stunning visuals and the audacity of the premise — essentially Doom meets Game of Thrones — made it one of the most talked-about games of the year.
