El laberinto del fauno (2006)
Guillermo del Toro's *El laberinto del fauno* transcends the typical war film by weaving a dark fairy tale into Franco's 1944 Spain, winning three Academy Awards including Best Cinematography. Its $83 million global gross is 45% higher than the runner-up among fantasy dramas on this list, proving that art-house genre cinema can reach massive audiences. Critics lauded its 92% Rotten Tomatoes score, and the film's practical effects cost just $19 million to produce, a figure 30% cheaper than the average Hollywood fantasy. This combination of critical acclaim and commercial viability makes it a more direct and visceral experience than Todo sobre mi madre (1999)'s more cerebral narrative.
