Jimi Hendrix
Jimi Hendrix redefined the electric guitar’s possibilities, a feat no guitarist before or since has matched. His 1967 album *Are You Experienced* sold over 4 million copies, introducing explosive feedback, controlled distortion, and revolutionary chord work that still sounds futuristic. Hendrix’s phrasing outpaced Eric Clapton in speed and unpredictability, while his stage presence—including setting his guitar on fire—created a legend beyond mere technique. He pushed beyond the blues vocabulary of Chuck Berry, fusing rock, funk, and jazz into a singular voice. This combination of raw creativity and technical dominance makes him the undisputed top pick.

Eric Clapton
Eric Clapton’s tone and emotional depth have defined blues-rock for over six decades, earning him the rare nickname "God" from fans. His 1992 unplugged performance sold 26 million copies globally, proving his acoustic mastery matches his electric legacy. Clapton’s phrasing is more restrained yet more emotionally precise than Jimi Hendrix’s explosive style, focusing on melodic bends and longing. While Jimmy Page built stadium-shaking riffs, Clapton’s six-decade career showcases unmatched adaptability across collaborations—a consistency that rivals the typical peak careers of other legends. He remains the benchmark for soulful, tasteful lead work.

Jimmy Page
Jimmy Page, Led Zeppelin’s architect, engineered iconic riffs like the 1971 *Stairway to Heaven*, which has been streamed over 1 billion times. His dual identity—studio arranger and live powerhouse—sets him apart: he wove delicate fingerpicking and orchestral production into stadium anthems. His live ferocity during solos like "Whole Lotta Love" remains a template for rock guitar, showing a compositional rigor that even Jimi Hendrix’s improvisations rarely matched. Page’s legacy is built on structure and showmanship.

Chuck Berry
Chuck Berry invented the electric guitar’s rock vocabulary, from double-string bends to the iconic duck-walk, influencing every guitarist after 1955. His single "Johnny B. Goode" sold over 10 million copies and remains a definitive riff—simpler than Jimmy Page’s complex work but rhythmically seminal. Berry’s propulsive, story-driven solos set the template for Eric Clapton and every lead player, proving that a few sharp notes can shape an entire genre. He gave the guitar its defining language.

Eddie Van Halen
Eddie Van Halen revolutionized rock guitar with a two-minute shock to the music world in 1978. His signature two-hand tapping technique, showcased in "Eruption," redefined lead playing and remains a milestone 45 years later. Van Halen's innovation created an entirely new vocabulary, influencing 90% of modern rock guitarists. This places his impact ahead of #7 Robert Johnson's foundational blues, as Van Halen's technique set a speed and virtuosity benchmark that the average rock guitarist still aspires to match.

B.B. King
B.B. King's vocal, sustain-heavy style on his guitar "Lucille" defined the blues and became a core influence for all subsequent rock and blues players. Over a career spanning 50 years, he performed 250+ shows annually, delivering an emotional depth rarely matched. King's expressive phrasing is richer than the average blues artist's and directly shaped the approach of Eddie Van Halen, who cited King's vibrato as a key inspiration. His tone remains a benchmark for warm, sustained notes, a standard few achieve.

Robert Johnson
Robert Johnson's 29 recordings from the 1930s are the bedrock of rock'n'roll, birthing a mythic legacy despite his short life. Johnson's dark, percussive sound is more haunting than the average player's and directly inspired Keith Richards, who built the Stones' foundation on Johnson's licks. His crossroads legend endures, but his musical innovations are the true marvel.
