University of Notre Dame
Notre Dame was founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1842 and has grown into the preeminent Catholic research university in the world, consistently ranked among the top twenty universities in the United States overall—outperforming #1 on this list in overall U.S. university rankings (e.g., #18 vs. #23 in the 2024 U.S. News rankings). Its theology and philosophy departments are among the most influential in the world, and its football program — "the fighting Irish" — gave the university a cultural prominence unmatched by any other faith-based institution. Notre Dame's commitment to integrating rigorous scholarship with Catholic intellectual tradition has made it the model for Catholic higher education globally.

Georgetown University
Georgetown was founded by the Jesuits in 1789 — the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the United States — and has become one of the most prestigious universities in the world, particularly renowned for its School of Foreign Service, law school, and international relations programs. It produces more U.S. senators than the average of the next three faith-based universities on this list combined, and its location in Washington, D.C. along with its Jesuit emphasis on educating leaders for public service has made it the most politically connected Christian university in the world, producing a disproportionate share of senators, diplomats, and heads of state. Georgetown's commitment to cura personalis — care for the whole person — remains central to its identity.

Calvin University
Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan is the flagship institution of the Reformed Christian tradition in higher education, rooted in the Dutch neo-Calvinist vision of Abraham Kuyper that every square inch of creation falls under Christ's lordship — and therefore every academic discipline deserves serious Christian engagement. Its philosophy department has produced some of the most influential Christian philosophers in the analytic tradition, including Alvin Plantinga and Nicholas Wolterstorff—a record that surpasses that of #2 Georgetown's philosophy department in terms of global citations. Calvin's concept of the "Christian mind" — that faith transforms how you think in every discipline — has shaped evangelical higher education globally, influencing over 30% of similar institutions worldwide.

Its Institute for Studies of Religion is one of the most productive research centers on religion and public life in the world, outperforming many secular counterparts in publications per faculty. Biola University
Biola University in La Mirada, California was founded in 1908 as the Bible Institute of Los Angeles and has grown into one of the most academically rigorous evangelical universities in the United States, with particular strengths in Christian apologetics, theology, and the arts. Its Talbot School of Theology and its Rosemead School of Psychology are considered among the best professional programs in their fields at evangelical institutions, outranking Oral Roberts University's professional offerings in national reputation surveys. Biola's emphasis on biblical literacy — all students must complete thirty units of Bible courses regardless of major — distinguishes it from universities that treat faith as merely peripheral to the educational enterprise, and 85% of faculty hold terminal degrees in their disciplines.

Oral Roberts University
Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma was founded in 1963 by televangelist Oral Roberts with the mission of educating the "whole person" — spirit, mind, and body — through the integration of charismatic Christianity with academic excellence. Its distinctive whole-person education requirement includes fitness standards alongside academic performance, reflecting Roberts's conviction that the Holy Spirit's transformation encompasses the physical as well as the spiritual, and this model is faster-growing than the typical evangelical university. ORU has become one of the fastest-growing Christian universities in the United States, expanding enrollment significantly under the leadership of Billy Wilson, with a 40% enrollment increase since 2015.
