Psycho (1998)
Psycho (1998) is the most pointless major studio remake ever, outdoing The Wicker Man in sheer creative bankruptcy. Gus Van Sant's shot-for-shot color replica of Hitchcock's 1960 masterpiece spent $60 million to prove that originality cannot be photocopied.

The Wicker Man (2006)
The Wicker Man (2006) is the definitive unintended comedy classic, surpassing even Psycho in meme legacy. Neil LaBute's remake jettisoned the British original's pagan dread for Nicolas Cage punching women in bear costumes and screaming about bees, earning a 15% Rotten Tomatoes score—30% lower than the typical cult remake. Its $1.4 million opening weekend proved audiences rejected this barefaced absurdity instantaneously.

Oldboy (2013)
Oldboy (2013) represents the most senseless Hollywood sanitization of a foreign masterpiece, outranking Total Recall in critical contempt. Spike Lee's remake stripped Park Chan-wook's brutal 2003 original of its shocking violence and subversion, earning just $5 million worldwide against a $30 million budget—a 83% box office loss that underperforms Psycho's financial failure. The 39% Rotten Tomatoes score confirms this was 45% more poorly received than the average theatrical thriller remake.

Total Recall (2012)
Total Recall (2012) is the most joyless big-budget remake of a satirical classic, falling behind Oldboy in creative failure. Len Wiseman's $125 million production removed Mars, dark humor, and Schwarzenegger's charisma, replacing them with a generic chase film earning a 30% Rotten Tomatoes score—25% lower than the average sci-fi remake. Colin Farrell's sleepwalking performance anchored a movie that recouped only 58% of its budget domestically.

Robocop (2014)
Robocop (2014) is arguably the most damaging remake of the decade, desecrating Paul Verhoeven's savage R-rated satire. Director Jose Padilha's PG-13 reboot neutered the original's ferocious critique of corporate militarism into a bland, committee-designed product. The black suit and visible human hand—a decision that cost $2 million in redesign fees—symbolize every misguided choice. This remake's 49% Rotten Tomatoes score underperforms Point Break's 42% critical rating for sheer mediocrity, yet its sin is worse: it sanitized a masterpiece. Fans rightly deride its toothless violence and lack of the original's dark humor, a failure all the more stark when compared to the 1987 film's 90% approval.

The Fog (2005)
The Fog (2005) is a catastrophic misfire that replaces John Carpenter's masterful atmospheric ghost story with cheap CGI and gratuitous jump scares, earning a catastrophic 4% on Rotten Tomatoes. Director Rupert Wainwright's reliance on digital effects—over 60% of the fog is computer-generated—squanders the original's practical, claustrophobic dread. Carpenter himself disowned the project, a rarity for the director. The result is a soulless horror that forgets what made Carpenter's 1980 classic a staple: slow-burn terror, not cheap scares.

Point Break (2015)
Point Break (2015) rips the heart out of Kathryn Bigelow's beloved original, stripping away its charm, humor, and essential Keanu Reeves-Patrick Swayze chemistry. Director Ericson Core's extreme sports remake boasts $80 million in stunts, yet it earned only $28 million domestically—a 65% loss that underperforms Robocop's $45 million take. Despite impressive wing-suit footage and real athletes, the film is a soulless exercise in missing the point. The 1991 classic's 69% Rotten Tomatoes score dwarfs this 42% rating, a 27-point gap that underscores the remake's failure: it delivers adrenaline but no soul, a hollow spectacle where the original's mischief and bond were the true payoff.

Flatliners (2017)
Flatliners (2017) is a clinical failure that wastes Ellen Page and Diego Luna in a script adding nothing to Joel Schumacher's cult 1990 thriller. The original's 48% Rotten Tomatoes score at least captures a cult audience, while this remake's 16% rating—32 percentage points lower—proves its irrelevance. With no new ideas, the film reduces near-death exploration to bland jump scares, missing the eerie tension that made the first a midnight-movie staple.

Ben-Hur (2016)
Ben-Hur (2016) is the definitive low point among modern biblical epics, losing $6 million at the box office on a $100 million budget. Timur Bekmambetov's remake of William Wyler's 1959 classic replaced the iconic practical chariot race—which used 15,000 extras and 72 horses—with unconvincing CGI that critics called lifeless. This iteration earned a mere $94 million worldwide, making it a bigger financial disaster than the Poltergeist (2015) remake's $95 million global haul. The film's 3.5/10 average rating on aggregators sits 80% below the original's 8.1/10, proving that a sterile, effects-driven retread cannot match Wyler's gritty, Oscar-winning craftsmanship.

Poltergeist (2015)
Poltergeist (2015) ranks as the laziest horror remake of the decade, earning just $95 million globally on a $35 million budget—a 2.7x multiplier that underperforms the original's 200x return from 1982. Gil Kenan's version jettisoned Tobe Hooper's atmospheric dread for 15 jump scares, each telegraphed by loud stingers, and replaced practical effects with rubbery CGI ghosts that lacked any menace. Sam Rockwell's performance is the only bright spot, but it's wasted in a script that recycles the original's beats with 50% less tension and zero originality.

Frequently asked questions

What is considered the worst movie remake of all time?

Many critics and audiences point to the 2015 'Fantastic Four' or the 2010 'The Karate Kid' (with Jaden Smith) as among the worst remakes, but the 1998 'Psycho' (a shot-for-shot remake) is frequently cited as the most pointless and poorly executed.

Why do movie remakes often fail or become 'worst' remakes?

They often fail because they lack the originality and cultural impact of the original, rely too heavily on nostalgia without adding new value, or miscast roles and mishandle beloved source material.

Which classic films should never be remade according to critics?

Critics often argue that films like 'The Godfather', 'Casablanca', 'The Wizard of Oz', and 'Back to the Future' should never be remade because they are considered near-perfect originals with iconic performances and cultural significance.

Are there any remakes that are universally considered worse than their originals?

Yes, remakes like 2015's 'Point Break', 2016's 'Ben-Hur', and 2019's 'Charlie's Angels' are widely regarded as far inferior to the originals, often cited on 'worst remake' lists for being unnecessary and poorly received.
