Top 10 Hacker News — Top Stories — May 5, 2026

May 5, 2026 on Hacker News signals a fractious, identity-searching day in the tech world. Today’s top-voted stories aren’t just coding tutorials; they’re war cries and eulogies. The undeniable heavyweight is the shocking announcement that Bun, a high-performance JavaScript runtime built by the Zig community’s darling, is being ported to Rust — a move that has ignited 452 votes and 314 comments, making it the most contested story on the front page. Meanwhile, OpenAI reveals its low-latency voice AI architecture, showing the corporate juggernaut still dominates how real-time AI is built (388 votes). But the list isn’t all infrastructure and feuds. A quirky outlier — a site that finds AMC movie showings where zero tickets sold (126 votes) — captures the crowd’s hunger for useless-yet-fascinating data. This snapshot reflects Hacker News’ unique ability to surface both schism and delight, distilled from the community’s upvotes over a 24-hour period.
